About the artist:
Joyce Novak is an American artist, now living in Florida. A graduate of the University of Michigan with a Masters of Education, she's been acclaimed in media such as the Chicago Art Review, American Cablenet, Rele-Communications Inc., and Channel 23 in Chicago. Novak did an invitational lecture/exhibition tour at the five leading art Universities in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou, China. Her original art and the print, "Spiraled Figure" were featured in a one-person exhibit at Artexpo New York. Other exhibitions include Chicago, New York, and Minneapolis. Her winning Purchase Award traveled to American Embassies throughout the world. Novak's works are collected by corporations such as McDonald's Corporate Headquarters, private collectors, as well as scientific and environmental endeavors.
"Through her energetic paintings of mystical landscapes and cosmic expanses, Novak pursues a quest for a higher consciousness that could reconnect the brute power of the physical with the enlightened virtues of the spiritual. Her images portray the evolutionary force of nature which, like the human pursuit of self-understanding, is a never-ending process of metamorphosis"-1
-1- Kathryn Hixson is a Chicago-based art critic, Chicago correspondent for Art Magazine, contributing editor to the New Art Examiner. She also contributes to Flash Art, the Journal of art.
What Joyce Novak Says:
"The shell is symbolic. I think of it as a life form that goes into infinity -- eternal life".
She's a spiritual woman and considers herself to be a Christian. But she tries to paint universal ideas and not focus on any particular dogma. She says, " I began painting mystical art in response to a poem entitled 'Prayer for Peace' by Alice Bailey". "'Prayer For Peace' is meaningful to me and others who are dedicated to daily recitation. With a continual search for spiritual value and meaning, I attempt to capture visual glimpses of awesome mysteries through imaginative interpretation".
"Some of these paintings allude to the indomitable spirit of humankind exploring the vast universe and beyond".
"Others represent a journey of self-discovery and hoped-for higher consciousness".
"All expand on the idea of physical and spiritual evolution and combine cosmic, worldly and mythical figures".
"They also suggest concepts of infinity, the lure to perfection, cycles and dualities of life. Harmony is the goal and can be achieved through the struggle and thrashings of nature's forces to maintain perfect balance".
"I do surreal work, too. Of dreams that exist somewhere in the levels of the subconscious".
"Even chaos is organized," Joyce says delightedly. All the works in her new series contain a sense of geometry, of the imposing of order.
"My paintings need to be seen in real life because of the scale -- and to get an appreciation of their true colors".
